Awards Season Fantasy Draft Hub
Welcome to The Awards Season Fantasy Draft hub! Back in 2020, our hosts noticed that fantasy drafts were made up completely of sports-based topics (Football, Baseball, etc) and asked, why don’t we have Fantasy Leagues for Awards Season?
Participants select films, studios, creatives, and more, in order to earn points throughout awards season, culminating with The Oscars.
This year’s draft looked a little different, partly due to the craze of Barbenheimer, partly from the joint Writers and Actors strikes. But we still had a blast and are excited to have involved so many listeners! We will be tallying points for everyone who participated and updating you along the way.
Rules
In this game, each person/team will try to draft the films, production companies, actors, and crew members that they believe will earn them the most points throughout awards season
Points can be earned when your pick scores a nomination and/or win at the following awards ceremonies:
NYFCC, LAFCA, and NSFC
Independent Spirit Awards
Golden Globes
Technical Guilds, SAG, WGA, DGA, and PGA
BAFTA
Critics Choice
Oscars
Scoring System:
Nominations: 1 Point
Oscar Nominations: 2 Points
Critics (NYFCC, LAFCA, NSFC, Critics Choice), Indie Spirit, and Technical Guild Wins: 3 Points
Major Precursor Wins (GGs, SAG, WGA, DGA, BAFTA): 4 Points
Oscar Wins: 5 Points
We will draft in a snake order and each person is able to draft from any section and category that they wish. This year, we have four sections on the draft board: First Half of the Year, Barbenheimer, Festival Releases, and the Wild Cards. Here are the draft rules and categories for each section:
First half of the year–selections must have had a wide or limited release within the first six months of the year. Premieres at early festivals, including Berlin and Sundance, are eligible here if, again, they were released by July.
The three categories are Film, Actor/Actress, Additional Creative
Barbenheimer- selections must be from Barbie or Oppenheimer
The three categories are Director/Writer/Producer, Actor/Actress, Additional Creative
Festival Releases- selections must have a major festival premiere, including Cannes, Venice, TIFF, or NYFF; not including Telluride bc we won’t know the official lineup until next week
The four categories are Film in the English Language, Film Not in the English Language, Director, Actor/Actress, Additional Creative
Wild Cards
AARP Pick- choose a film that you think will earn points at the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards
The Jamie Lee Curtis Award- choose a person who we think would be active on the campaign trail. [If the studios negotiate with the writers and actors to end the strikes], you can earn points for roundtable appearances, tributes, and speeches.
Original Song- eligible for points at the HMMAs, Golden Globes, Oscars; can be from Barbie if not selected in the Barbenheimer category
End-of-year gamble- studio/non-festival release slated to come out at the end of the year; only eligible for points in the category that you select; i.e., Film is only eligible in Picture
Studio or Distributor Pick- get 5 points if your pick has the most nominations for BP
Passion Pick- must be a true longshot
Your selections in the “Film” categories allow you to earn points in any category where that film receives a nomination or win, unless specified, and other picks will earn points based on their specific category.
Once a selection has been made, that person is off the board in other categories. The only exception is in the Film category. For example, if one team took The Power of the Dog, another could take Jane Campion.
At the end of the draft, we’ll each select a critics pick where we’ll earn double points at NYFCC, LAFCA, and NSFC.
Your selections in the “Film” category allow you to earn points in any category where that film receives a nomination or win, other picks will earn points based on their specific category.
If one person has multiple projects, you must specify which project you’re selecting (except in Wild Card). For example, if you wanted to draft Bradley Cooper in 2021, you would have had to specify if you wanted him for Licorice Pizza or Nightmare Alley.
